A Soldier of The Great War ©McEntoonz Music

In a nursing home back in my home town
Lay a veteran doughboy with no one around
'Cept me, just leaving he waved me in and spoke these words to my ear
He said: d'you know that monument standing in the middle of town?
The one that everyone ignores as they drive around?"
There is carved the names of my brothers, surname 'Brown'
Soldiers of the great war

Surely my name should be among the fallen,
surely my life began and ended there
The trouble is now, no one remembers.....a Soldier of the Great War

I remember flags were wavin', red, white and blue, in o' '17
A sweet morning in June, the girls blew us kisses, never too soon
For the heroes of the great warWe all signed up, my brothers and me, to go fight the Hun and Germany
I don't know what we expected but it ain't what we got
In preparation for the great war

Over there, the yanks are coming,
Over there we'll straighten the whole mess out
We were fighting for the betterment of all mankind....Soldiers of the Great War

It was early October, early one morn, the mortars opened up
Like never before, when the gas rolled in, men cursed the day they were born
And died crying for their mama
I watched a shell hit my brothers on the ground that they stood
I panicked and I ran fast as my legs would
And I never stopped running, never thought i could
A soldier of the great war

We believed it a just war to end all others
Who among us could refuse that call?
American boys dying for crown and Kaiser, soldiers of the great war
And of the brothers brown, slept the only survivor
a Soldier of the Great War
